Admin/Biog HistoryAnne Barbara Denise Toynbee, later Wollheim (1920-2004) was the younger daughter of George Powell, a lieutenant-colonel in the Grenadier Guards and Barbara Pryor, scion of a brewing family.

In 1939 she married Philip Toynbee. Nicolson, a friend of Philip's, became close to the couple often staying in the family home. During the breakdown of Anne's marraige to Toynbee Nicolson provided support to both individuals. In 1950, Anne married Richard Wollheim.
