| Admin/Biog History | Hayes' monograph on Sutherland was published as: Hayes, J. (1980) The art of Graham Sutherland. Oxford: Phaidon. [a copy is available in the Paul Mellon Centre Library, see URL below]
The project was originally initiated by John Taylor of Lund Humphries Publishers, along with the approval of Sutherland. Hayes was suggested to Taylor by Desmond Zwemmer of the publishers, A. Zwemmer Ltd., who was impressed with Hayes' catalogue for the National Portrait Gallery's exhibition of Sutherland's portraits in 1977.
In 1978, Lund Humphries told Hayes they were unable to proceed with the project and agreed with Simon Haviland of Phaidon that the project would be taken up by them instead.
Sutherland offered Hayes assistance throughout the project, providing biographical details, insight into his work and influences, and helping to identify owners of his works. However, on 17 February 1980, he died suddenly and so never saw the eventual completion of the book later that year. |
| Description | This file contains one hundred and seventy-six letters mostly between Hayes, John Taylor of Lund Humphries, Simon Haviland and colleagues of Phaidon, Graham Sutherland and various owners of his works, dated between 12 July 1977-28 February 1983, concerning the various administrative matters associated with publishing the monograph including the sourcing of works by Sutherland to be used as illustrations in the book and Hayes' direct discussions with Sutherland about his life and work.
Also includes a memorandum of agreement and contracts with Phaidon, lists of images selected for the book, and some brief research notes written by Hayes.
