DescriptionThis file contains material which relates to the 1977 exhibition of Sutherland's portraits at the NPG and Hayes' 1980 monograph.

Including:

-sixteen letters mostly between Hayes and Sutherland, dated between 7 June 1976-18 February 1980, concerning their work together on the exhibition and the monograph
-six short pieces either written directly by Sutherland (including a questionnaire set by Hayes) or derived from conversations with Sutherland and documented by Hayes, which cover a variety of themes including portraiture, inspirations for his art practice and biographical details
-planning notes written by Hayes for the 1977 exhibition and various miscellaneous notes
-some material collected by Hayes after Sutherland's death including two short newspaper cuttings on a memorial mass for Sutherland and a photocopied page from a Sotherby's sale of Sutherland's letters dated 28 March 1983
