| Admin/Biog History | In the early 2000s, Hayes began to develop a proposal to research and write a catalogue raisonné of Gainsborough's 'fancy' or subject pictures, with the possible addition of Gainsborough works after old masters. This proposal was submitted to the Paul Mellon Centre for consideration in October 2003 and was subsequently accepted. However, Hayes passed away two years later and thus was unable to complete the project. Hugh Belsey inherited Hayes' notes and eventually developed them for inclusion in his 2019 Gainsborough catalogue (see JTH/1/3 for further details on this publication). |
