| Admin/Biog History | Hayes' research on the letters of Gainsborough appears to begin in the 1970s, building on the work of Mary Woodall (see: Woodall, M. (ed.) (1963) The letters of Thomas Gainsborough. Revised edition [S.l.]: Cupid Press [a copy is available in the Paul Mellon Centre Library, see URL below]).
In 2001, Hayes' edited volume was published, Hayes, J. (ed.) (2001) The letters of Thomas Gainsborough. New Haven; London: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press. [a copy is available in the Paul Mellon Centre Library, see URL below]. This publication includes 110 of Gainsborough's letters, 13 of which were discovered after the publication of Woodall's 1963 volume. |
