TitleResearch files on architects, buildings and subjects
DescriptionThe files in this sub-collection concern a wide variety of activities under taken by Stamp including scholarship, journalism, campaigning, teaching, broadcasts, and graphic design.

They document Stamp's wide-ranging interests and extensive professional outputs, as well as the public's reception, and Stamp's acquaintances' and colleagues' reaction to his work.

Where possible, the original order has been maintained. Where no order was apparent, the material was arranged during the cataloguing process. This sub collection has been organised into six series:

-GMS/1/1, Research files on George Gilbert Scott Junior (1839-1897)
-GMS/1/2, Research files on Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960)
-GMS/1/3, Research files on George Gilbert Scott Senior (1811-1878)
-GMS/1/4, Research files on the Scott Family
-GMS/1/5, Research files on architects and architectural firms
-GMS/1/6, Research files on subjects

The first four series concern Stamp's interest in the Scott family. GMS/1/1, remains in the series imposed by Stamp, relating to his research on Scott Junior. However, the series GMS/1/2, GMS/1/3, and GMS/1/4 have been arranged during the cataloguing process, as the majority of the material was organised in untitled folders or as loose material. They have been arranged to reflect Stamp's work and research into other specificed members of the Scott family.

Stamp's research files not concerning the Scott family (GMS/1/5, and GMS/1/6) were colour coordinated: red for architects and architectural firms; and blue for themes or subjects. These two series have been maintained.

The material in this sub-collection is varied in format and includes:

-correspondence
-images
-research notes
-newspaper and journal cuttings
-lecture texts
-planning and publicity documents
-draft publications
-reports
-drawings/sketches
-draft catalogue entries

In the interest of clarity, George Gilbert Scott (1839-1897), is referred to in this catalogue as 'Scott Junior'. Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) is referred to as 'Scott Senior', and Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960), is referred to as 'Giles Scott'.

During the cataloguing process the decision was made to remove photocopies and transcripts of original material held in other repositories; as well as photocopies, offprints, and cuttings from articles and publications. Where it has not be possible to trace the location of original material, the photocopies have been kept; and where the offprints and cuttings directly relate to Stamp's activities, these have also been kept.

In some instances Stamp's activities and interest in specific architects, buildings or subjects where wide ranging and extensive. Where this is the case, this has been detailed in the file's admin history. In other cases where his interests were more contained; or there is minimal material; or his outputs are less clear, details have been summarised in the file description.
