Admin/Biog HistoryStamp was invited to be a visiting lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, to deliver a series of lectures on the History of Architecture. He visited for three weeks, from the 17 Aug 1981. Whilst in South Africa he also visited the School of Architecture at Durban, and Soweto.
DescriptionThis file includes material concerning Stamp's interest in architects working in South Africa, and his visit to the country in 1981.

It includes correspondence with W. C. von Berg, concerning his work and experience of working with the War Grave Commission alongside other architects, including Reginald Blomfield, Edwin Lutyens, Herbert Baker, Charles Holden and Gordon Leith.

It also includes material concerning the location of, and information contained within, original drawings and documents within South Africa created by British architects, including Herbert Baker, and Lutyens.

It also concerns Stamp's research for both the Silent Cities and the Lutyens exhibitions, and contains information about loans.

It also includes correspondence with H. E. Baker concerning a memoir of his father, and his father's work, in particular the Union Buildings in Meintjeskop, Pretoria.
