DescriptionThe files in this series contain research material collected and compiled by Stamp throughout his career, initially for his PhD thesis, and work for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), where he catalogued the drawings of Scott Junior; and then for his ongoing research on Scott Junior between the 1980s-2000s, which ultimately culminated in the publication: Stamp, G. (2002) An architect of promise : George Gilbert Scott Junior 1839-1897 and the late Gothic Revival. Donington, Spalding: Shaun Tyas.

The majority of files in this series remain in the original order imposed by Stamp: according to the location of buildings, or by themes, which are reflected in the file titles allocated by Stamp. Material concerning Stamp's biographical research on Scott Junior was in no discernible order and so was arranged chronologically during the cataloguing process.

In the interest of clarity, the names of counties, and individual buildings have been added to the file title in the catalogue. For files on multiple buildings, the names of individual buildings, the place name, and county, have been detailed in the file level description. File titles in inverted commas are those originally assigned by Stamp.

The files include material concerning the location of, and information contained within, original documents, relating to buildings designed, restored, or worked on by Scott Junior. They include correspondence, images, draft catalogue entries, research notes, newspaper cuttings and a variety of associated material. Where the files include material concerning other activities, such as teaching, journalism and campaigning, this has been noted in the catalogue.

Francis A. Bown was also researching the work of Scott Junior in the early 1970s, and the files in this series contain correspondence addressed to Bown, which he provided to Stamp to aid his research, where this is the case, this has been noted in the catalogue.

Images photographed by Stamp are dated, and these have been noted in the catalogue.

When the file description states 'letters exchanged by Stamp' and other individuals, this highlights that the file contains copies of letters written by Stamp, and not just letters he received.
