| Admin/Biog History | M. Knoedler & Co.'s London office staff collected news cuttings relating to works of art and artists, and presumably used these for reference. |
| Description | This series comprises cuttings from newspapers, mostly published in the United Kingdom, the majority of which were arranged chronologically and pasted into a variety of large hardback note books by M. Knoedler & Co.'s London office. Some of the volumes were titled, and this information has been recorded in the catalogue descriptions, and those which were not have been described as an 'untitled volume'. Some of the volumes include indexes which give a keyword from the article, e.g. an artist's name, title of a work of art, or a geographical place name, together with the page number on which the relevant cutting can be found.
Loose cuttings relating to reviews of publications by Alexander Finberg and the Turner Bequest were found inserted in the volume titled 'Cuttings, 1906-1924 (FHS/3/7/2) and these have been catalogued in a separate file (FHS/3/7/3). Other loose cuttings relating to dealers, the art market, and specifically to M. Knoedler & Co. were found scattered across the archive. During the cataloguing process, these were arranged in a chronological sequence and can be found in 'Loose newspaper cuttings' (FHS/3/7/21).
The cuttings consist of articles from various publications, including national and regional newspapers, as well as a few journals, and include information about:
-the sale and purchase of pictures -artists -exhibitions -collections -reviews of publications -wills and bequests -forgeries |
