DescriptionThe material in this series was found scattered across the archive and was brought together during the cataloguing process. It comprises correspondence exchanged between staff of the London, Paris and New York offices of M. Knoedler & Co. which is of a very general nature, covers multiple subjects, or continues discussion of a particular subject/subjects over a prolonged length of time. Although correspondence specifically about individual works/artists can be found in the Artist Files series (FHS/3/1), it may also be worth checking files of relevant date in the Interoffice Correspondence series for possible associated information.

The material includes:

-original signed letters
-office copies
-telegrams
-notes
-black and white photographs

The letters may include discussion of:

-forthcoming sales and estimated prices
-acquisition of sale and exhibition catalogues
-exchange of information in 'priced' (annotated) catalogues
-exchange of stock lists
-research on pictures, artists, and collections
-acquisition of images of works of art
-subscriptions to publications
-acquisition of journal articles and books

The correspondence demonstrates how closely the three offices worked together, particularly in London and New York, and shows how much information was shared. It also reveals the professional and personal relationships between the staff. There are also a very small number of letters which include discussion of other work-related topics, or are from individuals not employed by M. Knoedler and Co., and these have been described in detail.

The correspondence has been arranged chronologically by office, and the names of correspondees are given in the summary description for each file.
