Admin/Biog HistoryHenry Sigismund Oppé (1880-1915) was Oppé's brother, and a twin with Thomas Armin Oppé. Henry shared many of Oppé's academic interests, including an appreciation of art.

He died while fighting in Turkey during the First World War.
DescriptionIncludes forty-nine letters from Henry Oppé, dated between 31 May 1909-9 September 1915, concerning general family matters, as well as his time spent in Shanghai, China while working for a legal firm. From 1914, the letters are entirely concerned with the outbreak of the First World War, Henry's subsequent departure from China and return to England to enlist, train and eventually fight in Turkey.

Also includes a telegram from the War Office, London, dated 11 November 1915, informing Oppé of Harry's death. Also includes a testimony taken from [F. Drinkald?] who witnessed Henry Oppé's death.

Further to these letters is a letter from Li Ching Sung, from Shanghai, (presumably to Harry), dated 26 February 1915, concerning his welfare after leaving Shanghai.
