| Admin/Biog History | During the first half of the Twentieth Century - before routine photography was widespread - the easiest means of procuring an image of a work of art was often by buying a postcard. As such, collecting postcards became a popular pursuit for many art historians of the time. They built up huge 'image banks' of postcards, often meticulously arranging them by location; period and genre. |
| Description | This file contains postcards collected by Oppé throughout his life. Most are of an art-historical nature - depicting works of art from public collections and also historic buildings, particularly churches, from all over the world, but the majority from Europe. Many appear to have been collected by Oppé himself on his travels; others he collected or was sent. As a consequence, some postcards have messages on the reverse, these postcards are addressed to both Paul Oppé or Armide Oppé. |
