TitleGeorge Beare Exhibition Pallant House
Admin/Biog HistoryThe exhibition was proposed in 1985 following a letter Surry sent to David E. Coke asking for any information on George Beare. Coke asked Surry to notify him when he had enough information on Beare and they could possibly put together an exhibition at Pallant House in Chichester. Five years later Surry had enough research material to publish an article and start the exhibition. This exhibition was made possible through grants awarded by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and financial support from the former Department of Historical and Literary Studies, at Portsmouth Polytechnic.
DescriptionThis series contains materials related to the exhibition 'George Beare: Very human portraits of ordinary people of the 1740's by an artist whose style and quality at their best rank him alongside his contemporaries Hogarth and Hudson' at Pallant House, Chichester (11 November 1989). This exhibition was organised by Surry with the assistance of David E Coke, curator at Pallant House.

The series includes material relating to the initial proposal, planning, publicity and reception of the exhibition. It also includes photographs of the portraits displayed.
