| Description | This series contains correspondence written by Nicolson to his close family, specifically his parents [Vita Sackville-West & Harold Nicolson]; brother [Nigel Nicolson] and his wife [Luisa Vertova]. It also includes a file of correspondence written to a friend: Jeremy Hutchinson. The letters are of an intensely personal nature, the majority dating from his childhood until the late 1950s. They reveal much about the relationships Nicolson had with those closest to him and provide an insight to his emotions, personality and pre-occupations.
The letters in the series were retained by family members after Nicolson's death and eventually brought together by his daughter, Vaneessa.
In some cases, the letters were not dated. In these instances, where the original envelopes had been retained, 'sent' dates have been recorded. In the absence of envelopes, it has often been possible to ascertain approximate dates from the journals and these have been recorded in square brackets.
Letters have been organised by recipient & then chronologically.
