TitleWollheim, Richard
Admin/Biog HistoryRichard Wollheim (1923-2003) was a British philosopher noted especially for his work related to the visual arts, specifically, painting. Wollheim attended Balliol College, Oxford (1941–2, 1945–8), interrupted by active military service in World War II. In 1949 he obtained a congratulatory first in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

Nicolson was a close friend of Wollheim. In the late 1940s, Wollheim fell in love with Anne Toynbee, the wife of Nicolson's best friend Philip Toynbee. At the same time, Nicolson was involved in an intense love affair with David Carritt. As the Toynbee marriage broke down, Nicolson supported all three of his friends throughout this difficult period. In return they supported him during the breakdown of his relationship with Carritt. Wollheim, being at Oxford at the same time as Carritt (then an undergraduate), played a particularly important role.

Wollheim married Anne in 1950. Their marriage was dissolved in 1967.
