Admin/Biog HistoryFrancis James Herbert Haskell 1928-2000 was an English art historian, whose writings placed emphasis on the social history of art. He was Professor of Art History at Oxford from 1967 until his retirement in 1995.

The Nicolson Archive reveals that the two first met in c1950. They soon became close friends, socialising together and staying at each other's houses. They had a mutual respect of each other's professional capabilities and intellect, and often corresponded about professional matters.
DescriptionIncludes correspondence of a personal nature concerning arrangements to meet and stay at each other's houses; family news and thank you notes. Also includes discussion of a professional nature concerning, in particular, Haskell's views on articles in the Burlington, the Directorship of the Ashmolean, Nicolson's book on George de la Tour and various colleagues and professional issues.

Of particular note:

-letter, dated 9 August 1963, written whilst on a lecture tour of the United States, concerning Haskell's opinions on Walter Friedlander, various American colleagues, American museums and galleries, and the National Gallery (London).
-letter, dated 16 September 1968, concerning a visit to France and scholarship on the artist Trophime Bigot

-two letters of thanks from Larissa Haskell and a reference, written by Nicolson, for Haskell with regard to his application for the Professorship of the History of Art at Oxford, dated 1966
-two black & white photographs of Francis & Larissa Haskell (one picturing them reading the Burlington Magazine).
