TitleSketchbooks and Notebooks
Admin/Biog HistoryPetherbridge travelled extensively throughout her life across Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Her travel greatly influenced all areas of her work including her artistic practice, writing and teaching.
DescriptionThe sketchbooks and notebooks in this series were used by Petherbridge primarily during periods of travel. They are scrappy in nature and appear to be employed in a variety of ways: as a means of recording her thoughts and opinions; to list books she wanted to read or research further; to record information about people she met, or wanted to research; to list buildings and historical sites visited, with sketches of architectural details. The volumes in this series contain Petherbridge's thoughts, opinions & observations on some or all of the following:

-travel
-museums and galleries
-architecture
-research
-family and friends
-life in general (e.g. her mood, philosophical thoughts)

The content of the volumes is varied and may include:

-sketches (both observations from travels and preliminary sketches for works of art)
-research notes
-travel notes
-poems
-names and addresses
-bibliographical references

Volume titles in inverted commas are those originally assigned by Petherbridge.

As the range of content included in the sketch books is often extensive, it has been impossible to list every subject discussed within each volume. Instead, catalogue entries reference significant discussion or sketches. Where possible it is recommended that the sketchbooks and notebooks are seen alongside the relevant Annual Files (DSP/1) which have been listed in the catalogue descriptions.
