| Admin/Biog History | 'Witches & Wicked Bodies' was an exhibition held at the National Gallery of Scotland (NGS) in association with the British Museum, 27 Jul -3 Nov 2013, and at the British Museum (BM), 25 Sep 2014 -11 Jan 2015. Petherbridge was the guest curator of the exhibition. Christopher Baker, Deputy Director of the NGS was the internal curator, until he left the NGS to become the Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Aug 2012. Baker was replaced as internal curator by Patricia Allerston, Head of Education, later Deputy Director of the NGS.
In 2006 Petherbridge approached both the Wellcome Collection and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) about a proposed exhibition titled 'The Portrait of the Crone', neither of which were successful. In 2008, Petherbridge approached the National Gallery of Scotland (NGS), with a revised proposal titled 'Witches and Wicked Bodies', Michael Clarke then Director expressed interest in the exhibition on the condition of Petherbridge securing funding.
In 2008, Petherbridge applied for a New Dynamics of Ageing Programme grant but was unsuccessful.
By 2011 the NGS, was still keen on hosting the exhibition but due to cuts wanted to undertake the exhibition in partnership with another gallery, such as the Ashmolean, National Gallery or the British Museum.
In June 2011, the exhibition was considered at the NGS Public Programme meeting and endorsed, with the exhibition being set for Summer 2013. |
