Admin/Biog HistoryA significant number of the letters written by F. F. Courtenay to Thomas Nelson Waterfield between 1854-1855 concern a disagreement which took place between F. F. Courtenay and Frederick Halliday, the letters discuss the dispute, as well as Courtenay's dislike of Halliday, and also include: copies of letters exchanged between Courtenay and Halliday; a statements written by Courtenay; and newspaper cuttings concerning the disagreement.

The dispute arose concerning the appointment of a civil servant and resulted, perhaps indirectly, in the death of this individual. Full details of the dispute can be found in a statement written by F. F. Courtenay, 12 October 1854 (contained in this file: DHW/4/7). Some of the letters exchanged in the dispute were subsequently published and discussed in newspapers including The Overland Englishman, 8 February 1855 (see DHW/4/8).
DescriptionIncludes correspondence concerning the Crimean War (October 1853 to February 1856), and other events that took place in British India and Britain in the year 1854. Also concerns the disagreement which occurred between F. F. Courtenay and Sir Frederick Halliday over H. C. Saunders not being appointed to the Calcutta Treasury.

-letter, dated 4 January, concerning Russia's involvement in Persia and Turkey and whether Britain should intervene. Also discusses the murder of Captain [?]
-letter, dated 18 March, concerning the growing tension between Britain and Russia
-letter, dated 4 April, discusses the withdrawal of Burmese troops from the Pegu frontier (unfinished letter)
-letter, dated 18 April, concerning the opening of the Ganges Canal, and the ongoing railway works
-letter, dated 30 April, concerning Britain entering the Crimean War
-letter, dated 30 May, discusses the 'Khan of Kelat' (treaty with the Kalat state), and the trial, and sentence of Hoo[?]
-letter, dated 14 July, concerning the Crimean War and the bombardment of Odessa
-letter, dated 18 September, concerning F. F. Courtenay's dislike of Sir Frederick James Halliday, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal
-letter, dated 4 October, containing a poem written by Courtenay on Sir Frederick Halliday
-letters, dated 18 October and 7 November, discussing the Siege of Sevastopol [Sebastopol]
-letter, dated 18 November, discussing the disagreement between F. F. Courtenay and Sir Frederick Halliday, being publicised in Indian newspapers
-letter, dated 3 December, discussing a visit from the Burmese Embassy
-letters, dated 4 and 18 December, concerning Lord Palmerston
