| Description | This series contains six notebooks compiled by Waterfield, possibly between 1924 and 1971, although three notebooks are undated. It also contains a pamphlet from an exhibition of paintings by Waterfield in 1962.
Three of the notebooks contain additional material filed inside the pages. These items, postcards, an essay and three drawings, have been left in place, retaining their original order. These have been catalogued separately at item level. The notebooks are all different in format and size.
With the exception of 'Shakespeare and Sonnets 1-86', the notebooks contain pieces of creative writing, including prose, poetry and essays. As with his journals, Waterfield's general style is highly descriptive, candid, reflective and at times critical.
Only the titles, headings or broad themes in the notebooks have been listed in this catalogue. Waterfield's handwriting is occasionally difficult to read and some of the names or titles he recorded may differ to those in current use.
Where it has been possible, entries are cross-referenced with other relevant material in this collection.
