TitleSketchbooks
DescriptionThese sketchbooks span from 1929 to 1970. They are mostly complete, with the exception of the fifth sketchbook, listed as Clos du Peyronnet, which appears to have been the work of Waterfield's brother Anthony. The sketchbooks contain pencil drawings, apart from the second sketchbook, listed as 1937-[1938], in which colour pencil/pastel, charcoal and pen are used to make the drawings. Due to the wide date range of the sketchbooks, there is some variation in style, for example, the drawings in the 1970 and South America sketchbook are much looser than the earlier sketchbooks.

The subjects are mostly of picturesque scenes or buildings, drawn while Waterfield was on a tour or holiday, but there are also sketches of people and occasionally plants.

The sketchbooks are all different in format and size, and the sketchbook from 1970 has suffered damage to the edge of some of its pages.
