Title1937-[1938]
Admin/Biog HistoryIn 1937 the house that Waterfield had commissioned at Hill Pasture in Broxted, Essex, was being built. Waterfield had started work on the garden in 1936 and the house was completed in 1938.
DescriptionThis sketchbook is inscribed 'Derick Waterfield. With love from "Pussy". [...]ich, August 1937'. The 'Pussy' is presumably Waterfield's neighbour and stockbroker William Palmer 'Pussy' Mellen.
The sketchbook appears to have been in use until at least 1938 as it includes a drawing of his house at Hill Pasture, which was not completed until that year. The central 10 pages of the sketchbook are unused, as are a few pages elsewhere, but otherwise the sketchbook is complete. It is manufactured from different coloured 'Ingres' papers. It includes sketches mainly made using coloured pencil/pastel but on a few pages Waterfield uses pencil, pen or charcoal. The subjects are mainly buildings, street scenes, landscapes and people. Of note is the drawing of the house at Hill Pasture and one that seems of be Le Clos du Peyronnet, France.

The sketchbook is slightly larger than A4 in size.
