Title1692 Charter
Date1692-[1970s]
Creator NameRoyal College of Physicians of Ireland
DescriptionA second Royal Charter was granted to the College in 1692, as the previous 1667 Charter was found to be 'insufficent'. The new Charter extended the licensing power of the College to the whole island of Ireland, and also gave the College power to licence midwives and inspect apothecaries shops. Other powers granted included the right to levy fines and to the bodies of six executed criminals every year for dissection. The College was renamed the King and Queen's College of Physicians in Ireland, it was to consist of 14 Fellows, out of whom a President, Registrar and four censors would be chosen. The Fellows were named the body corporate of the College, with the right to hold lands and money for 'the common profit of the College', and the right to a College hall. Subject to the amendments made by the subsequent Charters, the 1692 Charter remains the governing document of the College.
