| History | The Academy of Medicine was founded in 1882, as the result of the amalgamation of four medical societies - the Surgical Society of Ireland, the Medical Society of the College of Physicians, the Pathological Society and the Dublin Obstetrical Society. The Academy consists of a President and Council, Fellows, Members and Student Associates and the founding Societies became Sections of the Academy. Since its foundation the number of sections has increased and as of 2011 there are 23 sections. The various sections of the academy meet regularly to discuss papers and cases relating to their medical specialty. |
