| Description | Hard bound volume containing the signed and dated manuscript and typed minutes of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital Medical Board. From the 16 Sept 1914 the minutes were typed up and pasted into the book until the last meeting on 20 Jan 1915. The minutes also include manuscript and typed copies of letters read to the Board relating to items on the agenda and are frequently between the Medical Board and the Sisters of Mercy regarding clinical appointments to the Hospital; and the Board and the Sister Superior of the Mater Hospital Sr. Mary Berchmans on various hospital matters and improvements. The minutes include such topics as the application of fines to the clinical teaching staff for ‘absence from clinical duty’; the appointment of Assistant and House Physicians and Surgeons, Surgical Registrar, Anaesthetist, and Pathologist; the organisation of post graduate education in the Mater alongside other Dublin institutions; the visit of Queen Victoria to the Mater on 24 April 1900 (4 May 1900); the establishment of teaching links between the Catholic University School of Medicine, Cecilia Street, the Mater and St Vincent’s Hospital (15 March 1905); instruction in gynaecology first discussed by the Board for senior students only (1908); discussions on lady residents (4 October 1912); internal disputes over the appointment of a dental surgeon (1913-1914); letters between the War Office, London and the Mater Hospital in which the Medical Board rejected the intervention of the Consulting Surgeons for the Army in Ireland in the care of patients in the Hospital (5 December 1914; January 1915), amongst various other topics. |
