DescriptionThe clear glass jar with the tin lid contains carbolised braided umbilical tape. The tape is rolled, with an end inserted into a piece of cork. The label, showing significant signs of wear and tear, reports in black ink: β€œ20 yards Umbilical Tape (carbolised) Prepared expressly for the Obstetrician. Made with a silky finish and of superior strength. A. Kuhlman & Co. Surgical Instruments, 123 E. Jefferson Ave., 3929 John R St., Detroit, Mich.” Carbolised umbilical tape is treated with carbolic acid (phenol) to ensure it is sterile and resistant to bacterial growth. This type of tape is used in obstetrics to tie off the umbilical cord after childbirth. The braiding provides additional strength and durability, while the silky finish ensures it is gentle on delicate tissues.
