| Description | This is a Schimmelbusch-type mask, used for open chloroform anaesthesia. It features a ovall metal frame with a handle on one side marked with "British make" and a screw on the other. The device features a wire frame, constructed from two intersecting metal wires that lock together at a depression at the point of intersection, which can be locked in position thanks to the screw mechanism.
The mask was applied to the patient’s nose and mouth, allowing the anaesthetic to be dropped onto the fabric, which would have been insterted between the wires, and subsequently inhaled. This design ensures that the anaesthetic does not come into contact with the patient’s skin, which could cause irritation. Part of Dillon Collection |
