| Description | This item is a vaginal speculum of the Sims' type. It is made of metal, nickel plated, and consists of a slightly curved handle and double duck-bill, one smaller than the other. In the middle of the inner handle is says "Fannin Dublin." Moderate corrosion is present, with scratching along the inside curvature of the bills and discoloration along the outside of the bills. It was designed by the American physician James Marion Sims in the late 1840s and it is still used during gynaecological surgeries for examining the vagina and cervix. |
