TitleReid's Uterine Sound
Date1900-1949
Creator NameFannin, Medical supply company, 1829-
DescriptionThis is a Reid's Uterine Sound, a probe made of flexible metal. It has a long shank with a curved and rounded tip, and little bulbs along it. It has a small, duck-billed handle with ridging to aid in grip. Each bulb has a measurement number engraved on the back, numbering "2 1/2" through "6 1/2".

It also has "Fannin Dublin" and "Made in England" engraved on the smooth back side of the handle.

There's moderate signs of wear and tear, particularly at the tip of the sound and at each bulb, as well as a large amount of wear on the handle which gives it the appearance of being two different colors.
A version of this sound is still used, as an instrument for measuring the length and position of the uterus.
