TitleOphthalmoscope Head in Case
Date1925-1975
DescriptionThe semi-circular box is covered in black faux-leather. It consists of a hinged lid with a push-in locking pad. It has a plastic blue label with "B. Silke" embossed in white. Inside, the case is covered in blue silk on the lid and blue velvet in the base. Here, two compartments house the ophthalmoscope and a green tissue-paper with "Spare bulb" handwritten in red ink. In a smaller circular compartment, another light bulb is secured.

The ophthalmoscope is composed of a push-fit shaft ending with a metal tip on one side and a light bulb on the other. The vulcanite head features a screw-in mechanism to secure the shaft once inserted and has "A.Z. Baker" written in white ink on one side. The other sid, with embossed "Raphael's", features a rotating mechanism with a circular, textured dial that allows the user to change the focus of the lenses. Through the hole, numbers can be read as engraved in white or red ink, ranging from 0 to 20, with both positive (+) and negative (-) values. These numbers correspond to lens powers in dioptres and enable precise adjustments for focusing at different depths, accommodating refractive errors in the practitioner's or patient’s vision. A small fenestration (window) at the centre clearly displays the selected number, ensuring accuracy during use.

This set was completed with a handle (missing) where the push-fit ophthalmoscope would have been inserted for inspecting the retina and other parts of the eye.
