| Title | Pair of Cline's Leg Splints |
| Date | 1875-1925 |
| Description | This is a pair of leg splints (left and right) of the Cline’s type. They are made of wood and composed of two pieces each: one longer piece to follow the external shape of the leg, featuring a hole where the ankle would be placed, and the shorter piece to be placed on the internal part of the leg, extending from the knee to the ankle. Each one features a black band secured with nails on the exterior. They also feature a white cotton string with a metal buckle that has two sharp teeth meant to perforate the cotton string and secure the two pieces in place. Each piece of wood has a “smooth, hard, and polished surface, (…) readily cleansed with soap and cold water” (Mayer & Meltzer, 1900:116). Some signs of wear and tear are present.
Cline’s Leg Splint was particularly useful for treating Pott’s fracture, which is a type of ankle fracture involving one or both malleoli. The splint would immobilise the leg and ankle, ensuring proper alignment and stability during the healing process. This immobilisation was crucial in preventing further injury and promoting effective recovery. |
