Date1900-1949
DescriptionThis item is a Neville’s Axis Traction Forceps, also known as Neville Barnes Obstetric Forceps.

These forceps, engraved with “London” on one handle and “Medical Supply” on the other, are made of steel. They consist of three detachable parts: two curved fenestrated blades with fishtail handles, and a screw-joint traction apparatus, which ensures the secure locking of the two handles together. All of these components are engraved with the number 3, indicating the size.
Signs of corrosion are present.

Neville’s Axis Traction Forceps were introduced by William C. Neville, an obstetrician and gynaecologist in Dublin, Ireland, in 1886. They were designed to provide better control and reduce the risk of injury during instrumental deliveries. These forceps are used for the delivery of babies presenting as occipito-anterior. The left blade is applied first, followed by the right, and then secured together with the locking/traction handle mechanism.
