Creator NameFannin, Medical supply company, 1829-
DescriptionThis is a clinical thermometer in a cylindrical nickel-plated case. On one end there is a long, narrow metal bulb. Next to the bulb, on the glass, there is a reference point printed in black ink to indicate the angle in which to hold the thermometer in order to read it accurately. The temperature indicators are also printed in black ink and measured in degrees of fahrenheit, with markers demonstrating the temperatures: 95°, 100°, and 105°. The top temperature that can be measured is 108°F. There is also an arrow that points at the temperature which indicates the fever point of an average person, 98.4°F. Below the temperature gauge, "½ MINUTE FANNIN & CO LTD DUBLIN MADE IN ENGLAND GUARANTEED" is printed. There is corrosion on the case but the thermometer itself is in good condition.

Thermometers such as this one would have been used to measure the body temperature of a patient by placing it under the tongue or the armpit. They are still in use today, although less common due to the mercury content.
