| Description | This is a Burrow's type monaural stethoscope, with band recording ownership of William Stokes. The main body of the object is narrow, which flares out at the top to allow for hearing. The chestpiece is flat, if not slightly concave on the underside. Stokes was one of the first to treatises the use of the stethoscope in clinical medicine. He regognised the importance of the stethoscope and wrote about the relationship between the physical signs identified by the stethoscope and the pathological condition of the body. The "Cheyne-Stokes Respiration" is an abnormal pattern of breathing that was first described by John Cheyne and elaborated further by William Stokes. |
