| Description | The Majira Programme was a 10-week course focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights. It was an EU-funded training course undertaken by the IFPA with input from AkiDwA, the national network of African and migrant women living in Ireland. It started in 2009, administered by the Office of the Minister for Integration and managed by Pobal.
The programme was entitled Majira, which means ‘family planning’ in Swahili, but it can also be translated as ‘seasons'. In total 31 women living throughout Ireland took part in the training course. Participants were offered free medical check ups and health screening with the IFPA as part of the project.
Issues such as STIs, HIV/Aids, sexual health, FGM , domestic violence, safe sex and women’s health services were discussed during the course, as were ways to spread awareness. It was hoped that the knowledge gained in the course would be passed on to their communities, improving access access to health services.
There were courses held in Limerick and Dublin. Included here is a variety of material relating to the course, such as funding applications, budgets, course materials (worksheets, flipchart and anatomical illustrations), evaluation forms, correspondance with partner organisations (emails, faxes and letters), attendee lists and team contact details, graduation invitations and information.
