DescriptionCircular, metal seal matrix of the King and Queen's College of Physicians in Ireland (later RCPI). Part and counterpart. Depicts a shield with Hercules slaying the Hydra, the harp of Ireland in one corner and a helmet with a pelican on top. Standing either side of the shield are the gods Mercury and Apollo. Underneath is the motto "INVIDET ORCO" and surrounding the whole is the text (in reverse) "SIGILLUM COLLEGII MEDICORUM REGIS ET REGINÆ IN HIBERNIA". One part has a short, projecting handle on the back and two screws on opposing sides of the rim; the other part is quite worn and has several indentations around rim. The Hercules seal was used by the College from 1692-1863.
