| Description | Unframed, quarter-length portrait of George Sigerson by an unknown artist.
George Sigerson (1836-1925) was born in Hollyhill, Strabane, Co. Tyrone. He studied medicine in Galway and Cork before attaining his M.D. degree from Queen's College Belfast in 1859 followed by his M.Ch. in 1865. He was Professor of Botany at the Catholic University Medical School and later Zoology at University College Dublin. He was made an honorary fellow of the RCPI in 1918. Sigerson was also a writer and poet and was involved in politics, serving as an Independent member in the Seanad of the Irish Free State (1922-1925). The GAA's Sigerson Cup is named in his honour. |
