| Description | This is a set of amputation instruments. The mahogany case, decorated with brass, has a central brass plate on the lid engraved with "J. F. FitzGerald June 1860." The case opens by pushing the two brass buttons at its base. Once opened, it reveals a velvet-lined interior with compartments where the instruments are secured in place. The case features a pull-off drawer, accessible by pulling the two lateral blue strings.
The drawer houses a large amputating saw, a metacarpal saw with a separate changeable blade, a large amputating knife, a medium amputating knife, a catlin, two trocars with cannula, strong probe-pointed scissors, two tenacula, screw-joint bullet forceps, and a folding scalpel with a tortoiseshell handle.
The bottom of the case contains a screw tourniquet, Hey's saw for trepanning and necrosis, a bone forceps, a skull forceps, two different-sized trephines with detachable handles, four out of seven scalpels, two elevators, and an ivory brush. Additionally, there are cotton strings (sutures) and a blunt-tipped needle. A wrapped piece of paper is glued in a tubular shape, with handwritten names inside that are still readable.
Most of the instruments are made of a metal shaft and vulcanite handle, with the exception of the trephines and tourniquets, which have brass components. All of the instruments are marked with "Young Edinburgh." Two instruments and three scalpels are missing from the kit. |
