| Description | Surgical instruments in a small wooden case. The case opens by lifting its hinged lid. Two brass hooks, which would have secured the closure by attaching to screws on the wooden piece of the lid [screws now detached]. Once opened, it reveals three scalpels, a set of three sharp metal hooks chained together and another instrument resembling a long needle. The main body and lid of the case contain metal and wooden compartments to house the instruments. Two scalpels, showing signs of corrosion, have vulcanite handles and metal blades, with "J. Gray & Sons Sheffield" engraved on them. The third scalpel with the same features is made by "G. Gibson Dublin". All the scalpels feature the hand-carved initials "J." and "JF" on the handles. Visible corrosion is also present on the three different-sized surgical hooks. The internal part of the lid of the case is engraved with the hand-carved name "J. F. FitzGerald". Additionally, the edge pieces of the case are unglued and one piece is missing. |
