TitleSchimmelbusch Mask
Date1900-1949
DescriptionThis is a Schimmelbusch-type mask, used for open chloroform anaesthesia. It features a round metal frame with a hinged mechanism and a latch that would have secured the gauze (which is missing) stretched over the bars. The mask is made of metal and shows little sign of corrosion, and has a curved handle where "Esska Germany" is engraved.

The mask was applied to the patient’s nose and mouth, allowing the anaesthetic to be dropped onto the fabric and subsequently inhaled. This design ensures that the anaesthetic does not come into contact with the patient’s skin, which could cause irritation.
