Norman beginnings by discussing the importance of 'the subject of insanity' to the medical profession, the improvements to the way the subject is examined, and the importance of correctly completing 'lunacy certificate'. He then discusses the condition 'mania' which he belives is 'not a particular disease ... nor even a well-defined group of symptoms'. He illustrated his talk by bringing in three patients from the Richmond Asylum.
A manuscript note gives the patients names and [case numbers].
