HistoryThomas Crowe Burton studied medicine in London in the 1830, receiving the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1838 and an MD from the University of Glasgow in 1840. Burton spent some years in Dublin as both a physician pupil in Dr Steevens' Hospital and as an attendant at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. In 1849-1850 Burton travelled as physician to the Embassy to St Petersburg and Persia. He the returned to Ireland, working first as a Superintendent of the Asylum at Maryborough, Queen's County, then in Waterford, Castlebar and finally Westport. He died in Westport on 17 April 1889.
