| Description | The wooden box opens by lifting the hinged lid. Once opened, it reveals a red velvet lining on the inside of the lid, which can be lifted to expose printed directions. The main body of the case contains compartments housing a brass syringe, tubing, and various nozzles made from ivory, wood, and metal. The instrument is the Improved Stomach Pump, by Weiss, fitted with an esophagus-tube, enema-tube, and pipes.
The brass syringe is engraved with the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom, featuring the unicorn and lion, along with the inscription: "Weiss Patent, 62 Strand, London" towards one end of the syringe body. Additional text reads: "Draw up the handle and turn until it stops; press it down and return it." The handle of the syringe, originally crafted from vulcanite, is now broken and detached from the brass body.
The set includes three ivory nozzles, one featuring a detachable screw ring, possibly designed to secure tubing or create a sealed connection. Another ivory nozzle resembles a small faucet. An additional nozzle is made of metal. The syringe comes with three differently sized mesh-reinforced tubes with brass tips for connecting to the nozzles.
The lid reports instructions for using the syringe as enema and stomach pump.
A glass syringe, not originally part of the set, was found in the box. It was removed and catalogued separately as FC/3/5/8. |
