TitleSchimmelbusch Mask
Date1875-1925
DescriptionThis is a Schimmelbusch-type mask, used for open chloroform anaesthesia. It features a round metal frame with off-white textile gauze secured and covering the frame. The mask was applied to the patient’s nose and mouth, allowing the anaesthetic to be dropped onto the fabric and subsequently inhaled. This design ensures that the anaesthetic does not come into contact with the patient’s skin, which could cause irritation. There is no manufacturer’s mark present.
