Silver-Plated Serving Tray

Large silver-plated serving tray. Embossed floral edge and open handles. Originally on 4 feet, one of which now missing. Inscribed in the centre: "PRESENTED TO/Dr. Alexis Fitzgerald/By the Officers & staff of the/WATERFORD ASYLUM/on the occasion of his marriage/26TH JANY. 1910". Stamped on the underside are the maker's mark "JS&S" in a shield, a beaver, the letters "EPNS" and the number "2176".

Napoleon's Toothbrush

Toothbrush set believed to have belonged to Napoleon. Contains: (1) toothbrush with silver handle and animal hair bristles set in a piece of ivory, maker's mark "IT" for Joseph Taylor and hallmarked Birmingham, 1804. Possibly also a French import mark; (2) tooth powder case with two separate compartments, lids hinged at the centre. Same markings as the toothbrush; (3) double rounded-ended [silver] utensil, possibly for mixing the powder; (4) red Morocco leather case, in two parts, both embossed with a fleur-de-lis.

Dublin Hospitals Rugby Cup Medal

Winners medal of the Dublin Hospitals Rugby Cup awarded to A.C. McVittie as Captain of the Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital team. Silver. On obverse: in the centre, the image of a man sitting on the crest of Dublin City, holding an angel in his hand, around which are the words: "DUBLIN HOSPITALS FOOTBALL UNION"; the edges decorated with shamrocks and thistles. Engraved on reverse are the words: "WON BY/SIR PATRICK DUNS/1898/A.C.McVITTIE.Capt". Also the maker's marks for James Fenton & Co. (Birmingham) and Moore & Co. (Grafton Street), and hallmarked Birmingham 1897. Suspension loop at top.

Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve Medal of Rita Kavanagh

Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve (QAIMNSR) silver medal. Obverse: a large "R" in the centre, crowned, and surrounded by the words "QUEEN ALEXANDRA'S IMPERIAL MILITARY NURSING SERVICE RESERVE". Reverse: stamped "CARRINGTON & Co./LONDON" (above the "R") and "B.H.J" (below the "R"). Hallmarked for Birmingham, 1916. Attached via a suspension loop to a red, navy and white striped ribbon, which is pinned at the top.


Awarded to Staff Nurse Margaret Mary (Rita) Kavanagh (1889-1971) from Tralee, Co. Kerry, who in July 1916 joined the QAIMNSR at Napsbury Military/County of Middlesex War Hospital near St. Albans, Hertfordshire and served on the Continent, first with the British Expeditionary Force from March 1918 to February 1919 and then with the Rhine Army until June 1920. She re-applied to serve with the QAIMNSR at the beginning of the Second World War and in 1940 joined the Civil Nursing Reserve at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

Ambassador for Epilepsy Award Pin Badges

Two Ambassador for Epilepsy Award pin badges issued by the International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy. Small, square-shaped, metal and enamel badges depicting a white, lighted candle within a black and gold globe, on a red background, surrounded by the words "AMBASSADOR FOR EPILEPSY" in gold lettering. The maker's name "THOMAS FATTORINI/REGENT ST/BIRMINGHAM" on the back of one. Both have a different fastener style on the back: one a safety clasp, the other likely a butterfly clutch, which is missing.

Royal Hospital Donnybrook Seal Matrix

Metal seal matrix for the Royal Hospital for Incurables. Circular in shape and shows a chalice with a cross on a plinth in the centre and a decorative diamond-shaped pattern in the background. This is surrounded (in reverse) by the name of the hospital and the foundation date 1743. Stamped on the side is the maker's mark "W.MILL/1-1/[BIR]MINGHA[M]". Some indentations and other marks of wear visible.

Presentation Trowel

Silver presentation trowel with ivorine handle. The blade is decorated with shamrocks and has the following inscription in Irish: "Do bronnad[h] an liag[h]án so/ar Eilís,/bean Stopford Green,/ Seanadóir/ar gcur céad-c[h]loic[h]e/de T[h]igh Ultáin/i a h-áit di." (Translation: This trowel was presented to Alice Stopford Green, Senator, who placed the first stone of Saint Ultan's Hospital in its place). The back of the trowel is inscribed "An 15adh lá mí na Nollaig 1927" and is stamped with the maker's initials "H&T" and hallmarked Birmingham 1896. In a presentation box; on the inside of the lid is the name "DONEGAN/32 Dame Street/DUBLIN".

Dr Steevens' Hospital Nurses Badge

Dr Steevens' Hospital Nurses Badge. Silver, fitted with a pin and suspension loop. At the centre on a background of dark blue is the emblem of the Good Samaritan. Above this, a white triangle with two birds on either side and a star at the apex. Around the edge on a pale blue background are the words: "Dr. Steevens Hospital Nurses League/Do Thou Likewise". On the reverse, the maker's mark "M&B"; hallmarked Birmingham, 1906; also stamped: "FOLEY/DUBLIN".
