| Description | In 1934 the Hospital Commission suggested an amalgamation of the National Children's Hospital, Dublin and Saint Ultan's Hospital to form a joint hospital providing care to infants and children up to the age of 16. The two hospitals agreed in principle and a Joint Committee was established to further develop the proposal, and a site for the new hospital was selected.
The proposed merger of the hospitals proved controversial and was actively, and successfully, opposed by the Catholic church through Edward Byrne, Archbishop of Dublin. Neither of the hospitals were under catholic control so were seen by the catholic church as being protestant.
