| Description | This is a Doctor's bag of the kit shape. It features a sturdy dark brown leather exterior, a brass ridged frame, a wide opening, a leather handle, a push-to-open and key lock mechanism, and two rings for a belt (missing). Inside, secured with metal buttons, there is a detachable white cotton lining feturing sewn cotton bands that create individual compartments for inserting instruments. The linen is marked with "Fannin & Co. Dublin". On one short side of the bag, there is a flap that, when lifted, reveals a rectangular compartment which housed the combined douche and instruments steriliser.
The combined douche and steriliser appears as a rectangular-shaped metal case, complete with a folding stand and a lamp. The apparatus features a folding flap, which, when opened, allows access to a removable perforated tray. On the opposite side of the flap, there is a detachable nozzle that can be twisted on or off. The nozzle itself has a mechanism that allows it to be opened or closed—essentially a wide bore system that can be adjusted to control the flow.
This instrument was designed for dual functionality in midwifery procedures. When the nozzle is attached, an India rubber tube (here missing) can be connected to its opening, transforming it into a douche for use in specific medical situations. Alternatively, the perforated tray can be inserted, and when the device is set atop the folding stand, it acts as a steriliser for obstetric forceps. The sterilisation process is completed by placing the two-burner lamp beneath the stand.
The lamp is equipped with two burners, although the lids cannot be removed to expose the wick.
Signs of corrosion are visible throughout, along with wear and tear. |
