| Description | This is a Doyen's Needle Holder, which are also known as needle forceps. It's composed of two shafts, connected at a box joint before the jaws, with a ratchet locking mechanism at one end and tapered jaws at the other. There are two jaws, each serrated on the interior aspect with a small, oval fenestration where the needle would fit in.
There is an engraving of the maker, which is "Stille" and "Sweden", with Stille arching over Sweden, as well as a star on each side of the oval made by the words and a larger star on the right of the label.
There is only a small bit of corrosion on the outside of each jaw, as well as some dull discoloration from use predominantly around the jaws. There are small scratches all over the needle holder.
This type of forcep would have been used to grasp and push a needle tissue when performing sutures, ligatures, or other types of wound-closure during procedures or surgeries. |
