| Description | This is a Rotunda Hospital Pattern Catheter. It is made of nickel-plated metal, now corroded, and features an S-shape with one blunt closed tip with lateral fenestrations on one end, and an open end featuring one finger ring. Inside the catheter, there is a cleaning wire which has a broken tip on one end and a finger ring on the other, which helps with removal from the hollow body of the catheter. Despite the corrosion, "Fannin Dublin" can still be read on the finger-ring end along with the number 8, which indicates the size.
This type of catheter was used to drain urine from the bladder, particularly in cases where patients had difficulty urinating. It was inserted into the urethra and guided into the bladder to allow urine to flow out. The cleaning wire was used to maintain the catheter's cleanliness and ensure it remained functional. It was also used in midwifery to manage urinary retention and ensure the bladder was empty during childbirth. |
