TitlePair of Stuffed Muslin Rings
Date1875-1925
DescriptionThese are two stuffed muslin rings. Each ring is made of muslin stuffed with cotton to encircle the shoulder and serve as a means of acting upon and receiving the sling (Hamilton, 1863:190). One of them is secured with a safety pin. They appear very stained and show signs of compression, indicating that they have been used for traction with slings. They were used in fractures of the clavicle and were designed by American physicians such as Dr. George Fox and Dr. Frank Hastings Hamilton (1813โ€“1886)
